The Langtang Region is protected as the Langtang National Park which spreads around an area of 1,710 sq. km. Trek to Langtang can be started from nearby Kathmandu driving approximately 40 minutes from Sundarijal or 6 to 7 hours from Dhunche/Syabrubesi over land. Although this region is close to the capital Kathmandu and is accessible without flights, its trekking trails are not very crowded as Annapurna and Everest region. Most of the region falls into National Park hosting a variety of natural splendors, from lush valleys alive with Langur monkeys to the towering fir and rhododendron forests blooms in the spring. There is a surprising amount of old growth forest: chir pine, rhododendron, alder and deciduous conifers. Plants like, larch, wildflowers, gentians, primroses, epiphytic orchids, etc. are abundantly found in the area. 1000 species of flora and many wild animals such as Tigers, wild boar, red panda, pica, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Thar (wild goat), rhesus monkey, common Langur, snow leopard, rare Himalayan wildlife and including hawks, hoopoe, cuckoos, barbets, owls, nightjars, laughing thrushes, black-capped sibias, Red-billed, parakeets etc. along with more than 250 species of birds are main attraction for the Langtang Trekking region. The magnificent Langtang and Ganesh Himal mountain ranges including Langtang Lirung (7246m), Gang Chhenpo (6388m), Naya Kangri (5846m), Yala peak (5700m) and Dorji Lhakpa (6966m) are few peaks to mention. Langtang valley is populated by Sherpa and Tamang families and offers splendid varieties of natural and cultural diversity. The Tamang are the principal inhabitants of the region whose religious practice, language and dress-up are much more similar to the Tibetans. The craftsmanship, traditionally built stone houses, windows, beautifully carved wooden porches and Gompas of architectural masterpiece reflect the solitude and the serenity of the Himalayan scenery. The cheerful Namaste! from every passer-by will be common as you trek. Langtang area has over 70 glaciers of varying sizes and holy lakes; including Gosaikunda, Parvatikunda, Bhairavkunda, Dudhkunda etc. religious serene of Hindus and Buddhists. Climbing Yala Peak (5550m) is another interesting part of this region.
